PHYSICS 745 - SCANNING PROBE TECHNIQUES FOR MATERIALS RESEARCH

READING COURSE

Course Website:  http://leung.uwaterloo.ca/CHEM/7xx/

Preamble: This course provides a self-learning study of scanning probe (SP) techniques commonly used in modern materials science.  The course will cover the basic principle and working theory, as well as the instrumentation and specific applications in three general types of SP techniques: (1) scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM & STS), (2) atomic force microscopy (AFM) and magnetic force microscopy (MFM), and (3) near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM).  Emerging variants of other scanning probe techniques will also be discussed.
Time and Place: Chem 060/064 - WATLabs Microscopy Lab or Spectromicroscopy Lab  - About 1.5 hour every week for 10-12 weeks.
